Don’t be fooled by a speaker’s reel.
Every speaker looks like a superstar when the lights are perfect, the dramatic music kicks in, there’s a standing ovation, and you’ve spent thousands on the best videographer and edits money can buy.
But the reel won’t show you:
– The eye-roll when asked to film a 30-second promo for the client.
– The meltdown over flying economy instead of business class.
– The freakout when the stage isn’t a Vegas production.
– The ones who show up like they’re doing you a favour.. in and out.
– The speaker who’s only doing it for a quick pay day.
– The one who can’t remember the name of the organization they’re speaking to.
– The one who blames the AV team for their own screw-ups.
– The speaker who refuses to adjust to time and blows the run-of-show.
– The one who sends their assistant to the prep call.
Some of the best speakers I’ve worked with don’t even have reels.
What they do have is this: they know they’re putting themselves out there to do a job, and they show up like pros.
For the audience.
For the client.
For the work.
Being a great speaker isn’t about how you look in the edit..it’s about how you show up when no one’s watching.
