What’s the Future of Work Really About? A Conversation with Dr. Keith Keating
Q&A with Workforce Futurist Dr. Keith Keating – on the Value Economy, the Rise of Soft Skills, and Why Adaptability is the New Expertise
Dr. Keith Keating is a Workforce Futurist, bestselling author, and Chief Learning Officer at BDO. He helps organizations future-proof their workforce through innovative learning strategies, human-centered design, and bold thinking around workplace transformation. As Academic Director at the University of Pennsylvania’s CLO doctoral program, he’s also shaping the next generation of learning leaders. His latest book, Hidden Value (June 3, 2025, link to order below), explores how organizations can unlock untapped potential through learning ecosystems and talent development.
Q: As a Workforce Futurist, what do you see as the biggest shift currently happening in the world of work?
Dr. Keith Keating: The biggest shift I see is the rise of the Value Economy-a workplace where it’s no longer just about what gets done, but about how it’s done, why it matters, and the impact it creates.
Organizations are no longer just measuring output; they’re evaluating the deeper value employees bring-through innovation, adaptability, trust, and long-term growth. Soft skills aren’t optional anymore-they’re foundational.
In this new reality, Learning & Development (L&D) isn’t a support function-it’s a strategic growth engine. L&D fuels the agility and capability businesses need to stay relevant amidst constant disruption. But that means moving beyond check-the-box training to build learning ecosystems that are embedded, measured, and tied to business outcomes. The future will belong to those who treat learning not as a cost-but as a catalyst for value creation.
Q: What do you believe will be the biggest challenges professionals will face in adapting to the future of work, and how can they start preparing now?
Dr. Keith Keating: The biggest challenge isn’t technology-it’s psychology.
We’re shifting away from the idea of being a “know-it-all.” Expertise still matters, but relevance now depends on adaptability. Those who cling to fixed roles or past successes will be outpaced by those who are curious, open to change, and constantly learning. This is the era of the learn-it-all.
That shift requires a growth mindset: the belief that skills and intelligence can be developed through feedback, effort, and persistence. It may sound simple, but in practice, it takes vulnerability, humility, and a willingness to fail forward.
Organizations that foster this mindset will drive innovation and resilience. And individuals who embrace it won’t just survive disruption-they’ll lead through it. The future of work won’t belong to the smartest person in the room. It will belong to the most adaptable one.
